Technical Service Group Leader - Deco and Wood Coatings

Your task structure

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise assigned laboratory personnel
  • Train chemists on laboratory experiments, physical tests and analyses, on managing multiple projects, on following and improving processes and procedures.
  • Develop targets and goals for assigned laboratory personnel.
  • Develop, mentor, and engage TS team members
  • Provide technical leadership for the assigned end-use(s)
  • Identify, propose, and implement measures to continuously optimize performance and efficiency of Technical Service Requests (TSR’s) and Projects
  • Maintain and develop state-of-the-art technical capabilities to serve the assigned end-use(s)
  • Function as a key technical interface with customers
  • Independently outline, organize and perform (TSR’s)
  • Independently initiate, lead, design, set up and conduct lab experiments
  • Compile, document, summarize and interpret results of experiments, tests, and analyses
  • Write technical reports or prepare graphs and charts to document experimental results
  • Independently communicate technical information through written reports
  • Propose and set project work priorities for self in collaboration with supervisor
  • Identify competitive products and evaluate
  • Evaluate new coatings, raw materials, binders, solvents, pigments, etc., as agreed upon with supervisor
  • Independently prepare demonstration material for use by our technical sales and distribution staff
  • Independently prepare and gives formal presentations to workgroup + company technical community + customers + trade associations, universities, etc.
  • Interface with extended laboratory staff at other ALTANA/BYK sites on processes, problem solving, and new products.
  • Write technical reports or prepare graphs and charts to document experimental results
  • Provide input for EU/TS monthly reports
  • Take responsibility for and maintain instruments assigned to them; provide and document training, maintain SOPs, perform or coordinate maintenance.
  • Independently write SOPs for laboratory procedures and analytical methods
  • Order and inventory materials to maintain supplies for equipment and laboratory
  • Travel to Germany to receive technical training and interface with laboratory staff at BYK-Chemie GmbH in Wesel, as necessary
  • Assist and attend sales meeting(s), customer seminars, trade shows, society meetings, as necessary.
  • Interface with technical sales team regarding Technical service requests, projects, lab sales tools and any other support
  • Interface with raw material suppliers regarding pigments, resins, and starting point formulations for paints & coatings.
  • Reply to customer technical inquiries received by telephone.
  • Read and understand SDSs
  • Lead safety culture
  • Work safely in a laboratory environment, actively participating in and complying with laboratory & company safety and 6S programs
  • Provide leadership for and participate in proactively identifying, documenting, addressing and correcting all near misses and unsafe behaviors and conditions.
  • Provide leadership for and initiate/participate in MOC’s writing, implementation and reviews
  • Provide leadership for and participate in inventory audits, ISO audits, lab inspections.
  • Provide leadership for and conduct investigation and follow-up activities for incidents and near-misses
  • Provide leadership for and perform routine daily maintenance functions such as clean-up, trash disposal, washing equipment, disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste in accordance with established procedures
  • Manage and review laboratory equipment and training logs

Your recipe for success

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts/Science in chemistry or related field; Masters degree preferred
  • 8-10+ years’ experience (post BA/BS) in Additives/Coatings (or related field)
  • Excellent problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • High level of expertise in formulation ingredients, application techniques and substrates for paints & coatings, particularly in Deco (Architectural, Flooring, Construction) and Wood coatings.
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory equipment applicable to paints & coatings
  • Extensive knowledge of additives and their application in paints & coatings
  • Internally recognized as expert in one or more EU and/or other product/technology areas of importance to BYK.
  • Proficient in project management and experience driving projects to completion
  • Thorough knowledge of physical and health hazards associated with chemicals and procedures to analyze and minimize the risks associated with them in a laboratory setting.
  • Strong understanding of safety considerations and labeling procedures associated with chemicals in laboratories.
  • Demonstrated capability to use computer programs for recording and analyzing data, generating reports and preparing presentations (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc., and possibly including SAP or other ERP software, Minitab, SpotFire, SciFinder, PatSnap or other specialized software)
  • Manage responsibilities of all assigned personnel (technicians, chemists I & II, Sr. chemists) in TS team
  • Accurately train team members and/or direct reports on conducting laboratory experiments and managing projects
  • Develop, mentor, and engage TS team members
  • Propose and manage multiple technical projects, setting priorities in collaboration with EU Managers
  • Creative mindset to pursue new and challenging ideas
  • Speak and understand the “language” used in the additives market
  • Independently initiates, leads, plan, organize, prioritize, and productively execute multiple projects and associated laboratory experiments.
  • Strong attention to detail and analysis
  • Engage and effectively communicate with other departments, international colleagues or other stakeholders.
  • Document experiments and results in official lab notebooks in such a way that the experiment could be reproduced by another chemist/technician.
  • Collect, document and analyze data, identify trends, synthesize results, generates conclusion and next steps and report to supervisor
  • Use of logic and reason to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Mechanical skills, ability to work with hands, strong attention to detail and analysis
  • Independently prepare demonstrations, lab sales tools and other support materials for use by sales/distribution
  • Independently prepare and deliver internal & external formal reports and presentations
  • Present or publish at external symposia, conferences, trade shows, trade journals or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to provide leadership in a group environment or as part of a larger team
  • Provide training to coworkers, sales and production staff, distributors and customers in areas of expertise

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work with chemicals in a laboratory environment
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to talk on phone, drive a car and travel by ground and by air coping with conditions of domestic and international travel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
