Your task structure

Summary:

Support regional wetting and dispersing market needs: Independently performs laboratory activities related to the development of new wetting and dispersing chemical products and processes under the guidance of the Group Leader.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Outline, organize and perform experiments and projects
  • Write SOPs for laboratory procedures, instruments and analytical methods
  • Compile, document and interpret results of experiments, tests, and analyses
  • Communicate technical information in informal conversations or by written report
  • Initiate interfaces with extended laboratory/R&D staff at other ALTANA/BYK sites on processes, problem solving, and new products
  • Independently develop and deliver formal internal technical presentations
  • Write technical reports or prepare graphs and charts to document experimental results
  • Communicate technical information through internal or external reports
  • Proactively interface with sales team regarding projects
  • Read and understand SDSs
  • Work safely in a laboratory environment, actively participating in and complying with laboratory & company safety programs
  • Maintain an orderly/clean and safe work environment
  • Proactively document, address and correct all unsafe behaviors and conditions
  • Participate in inventory audits and lab inspections
  • Perform routine daily maintenance functions such as clean-up, trash disposal, washing equipment, disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste in accordance with established procedures

Your recipe for success

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts/Science in chemistry or related field
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience (post BA/BS) in Additives/Coatings (or related field)
  • Good problem solving abilities
  • Good communication skills
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Open to international travel to receive technical training as needed

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong understanding and background in synthetic organic and/or polymer chemistry
  • High level of knowledge in areas related to chemical procedures, analytical methods, manufacturing processes, chemical/physical principles and laboratory procedures/synthesis found within a research and development lab environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistical techniques to analyze data and draw conclusions
  • Knowledge of physical and health hazards associated with chemicals and procedures to analyze and minimize the risks associated with them in a laboratory setting
  • Understanding of safety considerations and labeling procedures associated with chemicals in laboratories
  • Demonstrated capability to use computer programs for recording and analyzing data, generating reports and preparing presentations (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc., and including SAP/other ERP software)
  • Design and conduct laboratory experiments focusing on “next-generation” wetting and dispersing additives
  • Plan, organize, prioritize, and productively execute multiple experiments
  • Document experiments and results in official lab/electronic notebooks in such a way that the experiment could be reproduced by another researcher
  • Analyze data, identify trends, and apply statistical techniques to validate conclusions
  • Use of logic and reason to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to synthetic/production problems
  • Good understanding of analytical techniques for polymer characterization
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a group environment or as part of a larger team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
