Your task structure

Summary:

Independently performs laboratory activities under the direction of the Product Development Manager to support thermoplastics R&D projects. The candidate should be familiar with both materials science and chemistry terminology as well as standard thermoplastic materials processing and testing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Independently performs, sets up and conducts lab experiments
  • Compile, document, summarize and interpret results of experiments, tests, and analyses
  • Write technical reports or prepare graphs and charts to document experimental results
  • Independently communicate technical information through written internal or external reports
  • Evaluate specialty chemical and thermoplastic formulations as agreed upon with supervisor
  • Interface with extended laboratory staff at other ALTANA/BYK sites for collaborative projects and for testing
  • Write technical reports or prepare graphs and charts to document experimental results
  • Take responsibility for and maintain instruments assigned to them; provide and document training, maintain SOPs, perform or coordinate maintenance.
  • Independently write SOPs for laboratory procedures and analytical methods
  • Order and inventory materials in order to maintain supplies for equipment and laboratory
  • Read and understand SDSs
  • Work safely in a laboratory environment, actively participating in and complying with laboratory & company safety and 6S programs
  • Successfully attend/complete appropriate EH&S safety training
  • Maintain an orderly/clean and safe work environment
  • Proactively identify, document, address and correct all near misses and unsafe behaviors and conditions.
  • Follow emergency response procedures.
  • Identify/Document Near-Misses
  • Provide guidance for and perform routine daily maintenance functions such as clean-up, trash disposal, washing equipment, disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste in accordance with established procedures
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Your recipe for success

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts/Science in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials chemistry, materials engineering, polymer science, or related field; Masters degree preferred
  • 5 years’ or more experience (post BA/BS) in thermoplastics (or related field)
  • 2 years’ or more experience (post Masters) in thermoplastics (or related field)
  • Excellent problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Experience with using and formulating plastic specialty chemicals in a wide variety of thermoplastics and applications.
  • Experience processing PP, PE, PA, and PET is a must have.
  • Thorough knowledge of thermoplastic laboratory equipment for plastic materials testing (tensile, impact, DSC, rheometry, HDT).
  • Good knowledge of wet laboratory methods and common laboratory chemicals
  • Thorough understanding of safety considerations and labeling procedures associated with chemicals in laboratories.
  • Demonstrated capability to use computer programs for recording and analyzing data, generating reports and preparing presentations (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc., and possibly including SAP or other ERP software, Minitab, SpotFire, SciFinder, PatSnap or other specialized software)
  • Creative mindset to pursue new and challenging ideas
  • Speak and understand the “language” used in the thermoplastic specialty chemical market
  • Independently works on multiple projects and associated laboratory experiments.
  • Proactively work in collaboration with other departments, international colleagues or other stakeholders.
  • Document experiments and results in official lab notebooks in such a way that the experiment could be reproduced by another chemist/technician.
  • Collect, document and analyze data, identify trends, synthesize results, generates conclusion and next steps and report to supervisor
  • Use of logic and reason to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Strong attention to detail and analysis
  • Mechanical skills, ability to work with hands, strong attention to detail and analysis
  • Independently prepare and deliver internal reports and lab presentations
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a group environment or as part of a larger team
  • Provide training to coworkers and technicians in areas of expertise

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to work with thermoplastics and chemicals in an application laboratory and wet laboratory environment
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to talk on phone, drive a car and travel by ground and by air coping with conditions of domestic travel
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team oriented and be able to interface positively and supportively with other members of the laboratory staff. Provides guidance for technicians for thermoplastic project activities.

  • Willing to work additional hours, as necessary, to meet deadlines.
